Scottie Scheffler became the 2022 Masters champion after a brilliant display of golf at Augusta National. The then 25-year-old American held off a late charge from Rory McIlroy to win his first major title by three strokes.

Scheffler started the final round with a three-shot lead over Shane Lowry and Cameron Smith, who were tied for second place. He played solidly throughout the day, making four birdies and two bogeys for a two-under-par 70.

McIlroy, who was looking for his first green jacket and a career grand slam, made a strong comeback after a slow start. He birdied four of his last six holes to finish with a five-under-par 67, but it was not enough to catch Scheffler.

Lowry and Smith shared third place at five-under-par, while Collin Morikawa was fifth at four-under-par. Tiger Woods, who won his fifth Masters title in 2019, struggled with his game and finished tied for 40th at eight-over-par.

Scheffler became the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2015 to win the Masters as world number one. He also joined an elite group of players who have won both the US Junior Amateur and the Masters, including Woods and Spieth.

Scheffler said he was thrilled to achieve his childhood dream of winning at Augusta. He thanked his family, friends and fans for their support and said he was looking forward to defending his title which is now fast upon us.

How has Scottie Scheffler started 2023 golf season?

Scottie Scheffler is on fire. The 26-year-old American has already won two tournaments this season, including the prestigious Players Championship, and reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the world rankings. He also enters the Masters as the defending champion, having won his first major title at Augusta last year.

Scheffler's success is no fluke. He has been one of the most consistent performers on the PGA Tour since turning pro in 2018. He has racked up 10 career victories, including four World Golf Championships events, and has never missed a cut in a major. He also boasts a stellar record in match play, having reached the final of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play twice.

What makes Scheffler so formidable is his well-rounded game. He ranks among the top 10 in strokes gained off-the-tee, approach-the-green and tee-to-green this season, showing his ability to hit it long and straight and find greens in regulation. He also has a solid short game and a clutch putting stroke, especially on fast surfaces like Augusta's.

However, Scheffler is not one to settle for good enough. He has recently switched into TaylorMade's newest driver model, the Stealth 2 Plus. The Stealth 2 Plus driver has some subtle differences from its predecessor, such as a glossier black crown and a redesigned sliding weight on the sole. Scheffler said he noticed that the Stealth 2 Plus driver was even more stable and consistent than the Stealth Plus driver, which made him confident to put it in play.

Scheffler's driver is fitted with Fujikura Ventus Black shafts that match his swing speed and tempo. He uses an X-flex shaft with a weight of 7 grams for his driver.
