Summer of top class women’s sport continues with the AIG Women’s Open

With women’s sport firmly in focus, attention will now shift to the AIG Women’s Open where the world’s best women golfers are set to compete across the famed Muirfield links from 4-7 August.

Following the UEFA European Women’s Championship where England’s Lionesses were victorious, more than a full football team of English golf talent will be trying to chalk-up another sporting win for England.

Twelve players will be flying the St George’s flag at the home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh golfers when the AIG Women’s Open tees off on Thursday.

Former champion Georgia Hall, the highest ranked of these at number 27 in the Rolex Women World Rankings, proved her affinity for links golf at Royal Lytham & St Annes where she was victorious in 2018.

Among her compatriots in the final major of the year, Hall is joined by a combination of golf legends, such as Dame Laura Davies, modern icons of the women’s game, including Charley Hull and Mel Reid, as well as up-and-coming star Jess Baker – the 2022 Women’s Amateur Champion.

After arriving at Muirfield, Hall said, “To see the Lionesses so warmly supported through the Euros was fantastic for women’s sport as a whole and something I’d love to see more of in golf.”

Great Britain and Ireland is represented by eight further talents, in a 144-strong field made up of players from 32 countries around the world.

The world number 22, Leona Maguire from Ireland, has already shown her mettle in the professional ranks as the stand-out star of the 2021 Solheim Cup and in picking up her first LPGA victory in February 2022 became the tour’s first Irish winner.

Maguire said: “Ireland has produced so many talented golfers and to become the country’s first female major winner is a huge goal of mine.

“This has been an incredible summer of sport for men and women; and putting my name in the history books at the AIG Women’s Open alongside so many other talented golfers before me would be a great honour.”
